BMW TV! Boom!

BMW 3 Series – 40th Anniversary BMW TV, Boom! A couple of weeks ago Bavaria Films came to town to shoot the final portion of their five city BMW world tour in Las Vegas. The shoot was to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the BMW 3 Series and they selected to interview our favorite BMW nut, Chris Willett, owner of Sin City BMW. As the local production team, Black Raven Films provided crew, rented equipment, pulled permits and set up […]

NAB 2015! I met Emm from CheesyCam!

Holy Toledo!  I love NAB!  The fact that I live in Las Vegas where NAB happens every year is like Christmas in April, a 20 minute drive to the convention center and I’m surrounded by 100,000 people, all geeking out over this video stuff.  I love it.  The other thing I love about NAB is that I get to meet some of my heroes in the industry. This year I got to meet and speak with Emm from Cheesycam.  Emm […]

Location Scouting!

We have a client coming to town for a car shoot and they’re looking for a location to capture the sunrise over the Las Vegas desert. That doesn’t sound difficult, but images with a car in the foreground and the desert and sunrise in the background that are still close to town and our location aren’t the easiest to come by. Red Rock doesn’t open with enough time to get set up, anything closer and you inevitably have power lines […]

Justin Timberlake, The 20/20 Experience! MGM Grand, Stand In.

At the end of 2014 I had the extreme pleasure of being Justin Timberlakes stand in for his tech week at the MGM Grand here in Las Vegas.  This was for the final shows of his 20/20 Experience World Tour that took place January 1st and 2nd. This was the first time for me doing something like this.  As the show set up at the MGM, their crew had several days of tech rehearsal where they dialed in camera positions […]

Speakers – Yamaha HS7 vs. HS5 vs. Presonus Eris E5

First, I’m not a sound guy.  I know enough about this to know I’m doing a lot of things incorrectly with setup, testing, etc.  That being said I learned some things as I bought and tried out these various speakers that may be useful to someone looking for themselves. Yamaha HS7   Yamaha HS5   Presonus Eris E5   eStudioStar on Ebay where I bought my HS7’s from.   Cheers,   Adam Kilbourn 🙂

Wireless Directors Monitor Review! Nyrius, Small HD, P&C, Nanuk

I have wanted a wireless director’s monitor for some time now. When your cameraman sets up his/her shots, you see glimpses of the framing he does, but those looks are quick and the screen is tiny, typically 3 inches or so. Setting up a video village with a larger screen for the director is awesome, and doing it wirelessly lets you lose the dangerous cables lying around.   I’ve been stalking the Paralinx and Radeon systems and as I […]

exFAT vs NTFS – 1TB External Drive Re-Format: Speed and Allocation Unit Size

Warning! Technical stuff ahead!  We use a lot of external drives for media work and storage.  We’re constantly handing projects off to different people to work on different parts and that means these projects need to be mobile.  It also means that they need to work on both PC’s and Mac’s.  To do this, we reformat all our drives to exFAT which allows us to read and write to the drives using either a PC or a Mac.  Very handy. […]

Sun Surveyor – This Thing Rocks!

Holy Moly does the sun speed by.  On set, chasing the light is a constant battle and if you’ve been on location and had to deal with buildings or a nearby mountain, you know how frustrating the local sunrise/sunset report can be. I live next to a large mountain range and this is a constant problem for me.  I’ve lost the light on several occasions because I planned the day by what a website says instead of putting actual eyeballs […]

Price Mistake? Western Digital 2 TB External Hard Drive ONLY $25!

Not sure if Adorama is going to honor this, but they’re selling 1TB and 2 TB drives for only $25 on Amazon!  Only certain colors are affected, but if they do honor them, this is the cheapest I’ve ever seen these things.  – Adam 🙂  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EAS8KSW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 UPDATE: Crazy sale!  Within an hour it’s done.  I ended up buying a bunch, now I have to wait and see if they are honored by Adorama.  Fingers cross! 🙂   UPDATE II: Nope! Varaluz – Lightly Twisted

Lights, camera, Party Time!  Varaluz is an awesome custom lighting company here in Las Vegas that hired us to produce this cool commercial.  Their goal was to make a splash, something that would highlight there brand but not be the same boring stuff they’ve seen other lighting companies do.  We came up with several ideas, but this concept won out, the lights having a party when the owner leaves, ala the Bellagio fountains.  What was great about this was […]
